“I Start Counting” is a suspenseful coming-of-age film set in the 1960s directed by David Greene. The film explores the life of Wynne, a young girl on the cusp of adolescence, as she grapples with her budding sexuality and the darkness that looms in her seemingly peaceful world.

Wynne, portrayed by Jenny Agutter, lives in a small English town with her older sister Gwendolen (played by Clare Sutcliffe) and their strict but caring stepfather George (played by Bryan Marshall). Wynne is an introverted and imaginative girl who finds solace in her daydreams and counting the objects around her, a habit that lends its name to the film.

As she matures, Wynne develops a crush on her stepbrother George (played by Simon Ward), intensifying her longing and confusion. However, her innocent infatuation takes a chilling turn when she discovers a dead body in an abandoned building near her home. Fueled by curiosity and an unyielding desire for the truth, Wynne becomes determined to solve the mystery surrounding the murder.
Wynne’s investigation intertwines with her blossoming relationship with a kind-hearted boy named Peter (played by Scott Jacoby), who shares her passion for music. Their connection provides moments of tenderness and a respite from the darkness surrounding them.

As Wynne delves deeper into her search for answers, she uncovers a web of secrets within her seemingly idyllic community. The line between reality and fantasy blurs as her imagination runs wild, causing her to question the motives and intentions of those around her. Trust becomes scarce, and Wynne struggles to discern friend from foe.

As the film climaxes, Wynne’s relentless pursuit of the truth leads her to confront the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface, ultimately risking her safety. The tension builds, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats as the mystery unravels and the true nature of the town’s secrets is revealed.
