“Bad Timing / A Sensual Obsession” is a 1980 psychological thriller directed by Nicolas Roeg and written by Yale Udoff. The film is a complex exploration of human relationships, obsession, and morality. Set in Vienna, it follows the intense and tumultuous romance between Alex Linden, an American psychiatrist, and Milena Flaherty, a troubled, free-spirited woman.

The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with flashbacks and fragmented narrative techniques that contribute to the film’s overall sense of disorientation and unease. The opening scene shows Milena being rushed to the hospital after a suicide attempt, and from there, the film jumps back and forth in time to reveal the events that led up to her desperate act.

Through flashbacks, we learn that Alex and Milena met at a party and quickly became infatuated with each other. Their relationship is passionate but volatile, marked by jealousy, possessiveness, and frequent arguments. Alex is drawn to Milena’s unpredictability and free-spiritedness, but as their relationship intensifies, he sees her as a threat to his sense of control and stability.

As the film progresses, we see the unraveling of Alex and Milena’s relationship and its destructive effects on both of them. Alex becomes increasingly obsessive and controlling, while Milena’s behavior becomes more erratic and self-destructive. The film ultimately builds to a shocking climax, finally revealing the truth about what happened between Alex and Milena.

One of the key themes of Bad Timing is the fine line between love and obsession and the consequences of crossing that line. The film also explores broader themes of morality and responsibility, particularly in the context of psychiatry and the treatment of mental illness.

The performances in the film are excellent, particularly those of Art Garfunkel as Alex and Theresa Russell as Milena. The cinematography and editing are also noteworthy, with Roeg’s trademark use of non-linear storytelling and fragmented imagery creating a dreamlike, hypnotic atmosphere.
“Bad Timing” is a powerful and unsettling exploration of the darker aspects of human relationships.
