“Piranha” is a horror film directed by Joe Dante and produced by Roger Corman and Chako van Leeuwen. Set in a tranquil riverside community, the movie takes audiences on a heart-pounding journey as a swarm of deadly prehistoric piranhas is accidentally unleashed into the local river, posing a threat to anyone who dares to enter the water.

The story centers around Maggie McKeown (played by Heather Menzies), an inexperienced but determined investigator working for a private detective agency. When a young couple mysteriously disappears while on a backpacking trip, Maggie is assigned to search for clues near Lost River Lake, a popular tourist destination.
Maggie seeks the assistance of Paul Grogan (played by Bradford Dillman), a local mountain man with knowledge of the area. Together, they stumble upon an abandoned military research facility operated by the nefarious Dr. Robert Hoak (played by Kevin McCarthy). Unbeknownst to them, the facility had been experimenting with genetically altered piranha specimens intended for use in the Vietnam War.

In a disastrous turn of events, the piranhas are accidentally released into the river, infested with swimmers and vacationers. As chaos ensues, the tranquil waters turn into a deadly feeding frenzy, with the voracious piranhas attacking anyone who enters the river.

Maggie and Paul are in a race against time to save lives and alert the authorities to prevent a disastrous situation. However, the local authorities are resistant to intervene as it may affect the profitable summer tourist season. As the danger escalates and the death toll rises, they must find a way to stop the carnivorous creatures before it’s too late. “Piranha” showcases Joe Dante’s signature blend of suspense, humor, and thrilling action sequences that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

In a climactic showdown, Maggie and Paul take a final stand against the relentless piranhas, employing creative and desperate tactics to neutralize the threat. The film’s conclusion leaves audiences with a lingering sense of unease, questioning the dangers lurking beneath seemingly serene surfaces.

“Piranha” remains a cult classic in the horror genre, showcasing Joe Dante’s skill in crafting suspenseful and entertaining cinema with its blend of scares, humor, and a touch of social commentary.
