WOLFWALKERS

“Wolfwalkers,” directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, is a visually stunning animated fantasy film released in 2020. The film is the final installment in Moore’s Irish folklore trilogy, following The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014).

Set in 1650, the story takes place in Kilkenny, Ireland, under English rule. Robyn Goodfellowe (Honor Kneafsey), an adventurous young girl, dreams of becoming a hunter like her father, Bill Goodfellowe (Sean Bean). Against her father’s wishes, Robyn sneaks into the forbidden forest, believed to be inhabited by wolves, to prove herself.

In the forest, Robyn encounters Mebh Óg Mactíre (Eva Whittaker), a wild and free-spirited girl with the magical ability to transform into a wolf while her human body sleeps. Mebh is a “Wolfwalker,” someone who can enter the wolf’s consciousness while in human form. The two girls form a deep bond, and Robyn discovers the secret world of the Wolfwalkers, who are connected to the forest’s magic.

The central conflict arises when the Lord Protector (Simon McBurney), an English ruler, arrives in Kilkenny with the mission to clear the forest for farming. He employs Robyn’s father to hunt down the wolves, leading Robyn to grapple with her loyalty to her family and her newfound friendship with Mebh.

As the tension between the English settlers and the mystical world of the Wolfwalkers intensifies, Robyn must navigate a delicate balance between the two worlds. The film beautifully explores themes of friendship, environmentalism, and the consequences of unchecked power.
