THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER aka THE PROMISE OF BED

“This, That, and the Other,” aka ‘The Promise of Bed, “is a 1969 British sex comedy directed by Derek Ford. It features three separate stories, each with a unique plot.

The first story follows the character Susan Stress, portrayed by Vanda Hudson, a sex-crazed actress eager to land a role in a film. She comes up with a plan to seduce the producer’s son by convincing him to take raunchy photographs of her, hoping he will persuade his father to give her the part.

In the second story, we meet George, played by Victor Spinetti, a depressed loner on the verge of giving up. One day, a young and attractive hippie girl shows up with a group of friends at his place, mistaking it for the location of a party. To make matters worse, they believe the party theme is suicide.

The final story of the trilogy follows a lascivious taxi driver, portrayed by John Bird, who takes a mysterious and sexy girl, played by Yutte Stensgaard, to a remote country retreat. They become involved in psychedelics, which leads to some bizarre hallucinations.

The film features other notable actors, including Dennis Waterman as the photographer, Vanessa Howard as Barbara, Gordon Sterne as the producer, Peter Kinsley as Wilbur, Roy Brannigan as Jeffrey, Alexandra Bastedo as Angie, Christopher Mitchell as Carl, Angela Grant as the flower girl, Valerie Leon as the bath girl, and Cleo Goldstein as the hand’s girl.

While Ths, That and the Other,” aka “A Promise of Bed,” falls into the British sex comedy genre that was popular then, it was generally well-received. It was noted for its visually interesting sequences, which reflected a moment in cinema when the lighting became more dynamic and used to create mood and depth. Critics called it “a trilogy of slight, titillating sketches, short on comedy but better performed than these usually are.”
