LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG aka THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is a 1964 visually stunning musical drama directed by Jacques Demy. The film, notable for its entirely sung dialogue and vibrant color palette, tells a poignant love story set in the coastal town of Cherbourg, France.

The story begins in 1957, focusing on 17-year-old Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve), who works in her mother’s umbrella shop, “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg.” Geneviève is deeply in love with Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a young auto mechanic. Their romance is passionate but faces opposition from Geneviève’s mother, Madame Emery (Anne Vernon), who believes her daughter is too young to be so committed.

Guy is drafted into the French army to fight in the Algerian War as their love affair blossoms, leaving Geneviève heartbroken and pregnant. They vow to remain faithful to each other and exchange love letters during Guy’s two-year deployment. However, the distance and the pressures of their separate lives begin to take a toll on their relationship.
While Guy is away, Geneviève’s situation becomes increasingly difficult. Her mother pressures her to marry a wealthy, kind-hearted jeweler named Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), who offers stability and security. Desperate and feeling abandoned, Geneviève reluctantly agrees, believing it to be the best decision for her unborn child.

When Guy returns from the war, he finds that life has changed drastically. He discovers that Geneviève has married Roland and moved away. Devastated and struggling to readjust to civilian life, Guy finds solace in the companionship of Madeleine (Ellen Farner), a young woman who has cared for his sick aunt. They eventually marry and start a family.

The film’s final act is set several years later. Guy is now running his own gas station, and one snowy evening, he encounters Geneviève, who stops by with her young daughter. Their reunion is bittersweet, filled with unspoken emotions and the realization that their lives have taken different paths. Both have moved on, but the memories of their lost love linger.

“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is celebrated for its unique approach to storytelling, with every line sung and accompanied by Michel Legrand’s hauntingly beautiful score. The film’s vibrant use of color and meticulous attention to detail create a dreamlike atmosphere, enhancing the emotional depth of the narrative. Catherine Deneuve’s breakout performance as Geneviève and Nino Castelnuovo’s portrayal of Guy anchors the film’s exploration of love, loss, and the passage of time.
