Fatal Attraction (1987) is a psychological thriller directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and Anne Archer. The film became a cultural phenomenon that year due to its suspenseful storytelling, exploration of infidelity and obsession, and a particular scene with a rabbit.

The story centers around Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), a successful New York City attorney with a seemingly perfect life. He has a loving wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and a young daughter, Ellen (Ellen Hamilton Latzen). While Beth and Ellen leave for the weekend, Dan meets Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), an editor at a publishing company, at a work event. Dan and Alex share drinks together, and despite Dan’s initial reluctance, they end up having a passionate one-night stand. While Dan sees this encounter as a brief affair, Alex believes it much deeper. She cannot accept that their time together was just a meaningless fling and starts to pursue him relentlessly. Alex becomes increasingly obsessive and unstable when Dan tries to end their relationship. She calls him repeatedly, shows up at his office, and even slits her wrists in a dramatic plea for attention.

Now desperate to keep his affair a secret, Dan attempts to smooth things over with his wife and return to his everyday life. However, Alex refuses. She escalates her harassment—showing up at his home, befriending Beth, and eventually revealing her pregnancy, demanding that Dan take responsibility.

As Dan’s life spirals out of control, Alex’s behavior grows more dangerous. She terrorizes his family, boiling Ellen’s pet rabbit in a now-infamous scene. The situation reaches a breaking point when Alex kidnaps Ellen, forcing Beth and Dan into a frantic search. Though Ellen is safely returned, the incident leaves Beth deeply shaken.

Realizing that Alex will never stop, Dan breaks into her apartment to confront her. This leads to a violent struggle. The climax occurs when Alex sneaks into the Gallagher home, attacking Beth in a fit of rage. Dan intervenes, and after a brutal fight in the bathroom, Beth shoots Alex, finally ending the nightmare.

The film closes with the Gallaghers embracing, shaken but united, as the police arrive.
“Fatal Attraction” explores themes of infidelity, guilt, obsession, and consequences. Glenn Close’s portrayal of Alex Forrest, a woman scorned who descends into madness, earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The film remains one of the most iconic thrillers of the 1980s.
