21 Grams is a 2003 psychological drama directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. The film stars Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Melissa Leo. Known for its nonlinear narrative, the film weaves together the lives of three distraught individuals connected by a tragic accident.

The film unfolds in a fragmented timeline, gradually revealing how the lives of Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), Cristina Peck (Naomi Watts), and Jack Jordan (Benicio del Toro) become entangled through fate, loss, and redemption.

Paul Rivers is a critically ill mathematician with a failing heart. He is emotionally detached from his wife, Mary (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who is desperate to conceive a child before Paul succumbs to his illness. Paul eventually undergoes a heart transplant, which saves his life, but he later discovers that his donor was Michael Peck, Cristina’s late husband.

Cristina Peck is a recovering addict who has built a stable life with her husband, Michael, and their two young daughters. However, her world is shattered when Michael and their children are suddenly killed in a hit-and-run accident. Overcome with grief, Cristina relapses into drugs and reckless behavior, unable to cope with the pain.

Jack Jordan is a reformed ex-convict who has found solace in religion. He is devoted to his wife, Marianne (Melissa Leo), and their children. However, his faith is tested when he accidentally runs over Michael and his daughters while speeding in his truck. Initially, Jack flees the scene but later confesses to the crime, leading to his arrest and incarceration. His guilt causes a spiritual and emotional crisis, as he believes he is beyond redemption.

After receiving Michael’s heart, Paul becomes obsessed with learning about his donor. This obsession leads him to Cristina, and the two form an unlikely and emotionally intense relationship. Paul, knowing his time is still limited despite the transplant, helps Cristina track down Jack Jordan, believing that confronting him will bring closure.

Consumed by grief and Anger, Cristina persuades Paul to help her seek revenge on Jack. Despite his initial reluctance, Paul agrees, but as events unfold, they both struggle with the morality of their actions. When Paul and Cristina finally confront Jack, the situation spirals into violence, leaving them all questioning whether revenge will truly ease their suffering.

In a final tragic twist, Paul’s health deteriorates once again, leading to his death. The film closes with the characters grappling with the weight of their actions, leaving us to ponder the meaning of loss, destiny, and redemption. The title “21 Grams” refers to a supposed scientific theory that the human soul weighs 21 grams, symbolizing what is lost at death.
