SACRED HOUSES: THE RANGRA THEATER, ALPINE, TEXAS

In this edition of the “Sacred Houses Series,” we pay homage to the Rangra Theater in Alpine, Texas, USA, as we continue to honor notable movie theaters worldwide.

The Rangra Theater in Alpine, Texas, has a rich history dating back to its original opening in 1921 as the Big Ben Theatre. Over the decades, it underwent several name changes, including the Mojave Theatre in 1922, the Texas Theatre in 1936, and the Tivoli Theatre in 1946. The Tivoli Theatre operated until 1954. In the 1970s, Avanish Rangra, an Indian immigrant and chemistry professor at Sul Ross State University, and his wife Anju purchased the historic theater.
