“Dracula” (1931) is the seminal Universal horror film directed by Tod Browning, which set the stage for many of the iconic vampire films that followed. Adapted from the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker, the film tells the story of Count Dracula, a centuries-old vampire who seeks to move from Transylvania to London to spread the undead curse and pursue his obsession with a young woman named Mina Seward.

The film opens with Jonathan Harker (David Mannes), an English solicitor, traveling to Transylvania to assist Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) purchase an estate in England. Harker soon realizes that Dracula is not merely a nobleman but a vampire with an insatiable thirst for blood. Dracula traps Harker in his castle, and with the help of his hypnotic powers, he embarks on a journey to London. Along the way, Dracula’s malevolent influence spreads, and his arrival begins a reign of terror.

In London, Dracula sets his sights on Mina Seward (Helen Chandler), Harker’s fiancée. Mina’s beauty and innocence captivate the vampire, and he soon begins his attempt to make her his bride. Meanwhile, Harker manages to escape Dracula’s clutches and returns to England, but by then, Dracula’s presence has already begun to corrupt Mina, and she starts to fall under his sway.

Dracula’s arrival in London is marked by a series of mysterious events, including the strange illness of Mina’s best friend, Lucy Weston (Frances Dade), who begins to exhibit signs of vampirism. As Lucy’s health deteriorates, her father, Dr. Seward (Charles K. Gerrard), and her fiancé, John Harker, call upon Professor Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) to investigate. Van Helsing, a scholar of the occult, quickly deduces that Lucy is the victim of a vampire. Despite their best efforts to save her, Lucy succumbs to Dracula’s bite and becomes one of the undead.

Now aware of the full extent of Dracula’s powers, Van Helsing works with Harker and Lucy’s family to stop the vampire. The pursuit of Dracula culminates in a tense and atmospheric battle between the vampire and Van Helsing. Van Helsing, armed with knowledge of Dracula’s vulnerabilities—such as his fear of sunlight and the necessity of a stake through the heart—sets out to destroy Dracula and save Mina from his control.
The film’s conclusion sees Van Helsing confronting Dracula in a dramatic showdown. Dracula ultimately meets his demise in the hands of those seeking to end his reign of terror. Mina, freed from Dracula’s control, is saved, but the victory is bittersweet, as the horrors of Dracula’s curse will forever linger in their memories.
