“Wander to Wonder” is a 2023 short stop-motion animation film directed by Nina Gantz and written by Simon Cartwright, Daan Bakker, and Stienette Bosklopper. It won the BAFTA Award for Best British Short Animation and was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The film features Terence Dunn as Billy Budd, Neil Savage as Uncle Gilly, Amanda Lawrence as Mary, and Toby Jones as Fumbleton.

Set in the 1980s, “Wander to Wonder” follows Mary, Billybud, and Fumbleton, three tiny puppet-like performers who star in a whimsical children’s television show helmed by their creator and host, Uncle Gilly

When Uncle Gilly suddenly dies in the studio—also their home—the trio is left stranded, still adorned in fuzzy creature costumes, desperately holding onto their routine despite no audience or crew Their studio becomes a decaying world: props wear out, food dwindles, and they resort to bizarre coping mechanisms: Mary stubbornly continues to perform, watching old episodes and reading fan mail in denial.

Fumbleton, prone to theatrical flair, recites Shakespeare or stares longingly out of the windows, whilst Billybud, the quiet, spacey one, endlessly juggles leftover props.

As nourishment fades, they’re forced to eat flies gathering around Uncle Gilly’s body—an act as grotesque as it is desperate. Tensions rise in a heated argument about their uncertain future, culminating in Billybud accidentally setting the studio ablaze while juggling lit matches.

They survive the inferno by hiding in the oven. At dawn, they emerge to a devastated studio: the camera is destroyed, and a hole has been burned through the wall. A hungry bird enters—threatening their safety—but Fumbleton bravely kills it using a makeshift spear.

In the film’s quietly triumphant final moment, a breeze drifts through the hole. The three puppets step outside into the sunlight, accepting their loss and walking hopefully into whatever lies ahead.

“Wander to Wonder” is a hauntingly beautiful, 14‑minute stop-motion film—a poignant allegory of grief, identity, and resilience. Its endearing yet surreal puppets navigate a world without purpose, ultimately choosing hope amid devastation.
