“Reckless” is a short film from 2013, written by Einar Sverdrup and directed by Bjørn Erik Pihlmann Sørensen. The film is set during the hottest summer on record in a quiet suburban neighborhood. The oppressive heat and lethargy permeate the atmosphere, intensifying the restlessness often felt during adolescence.
Sofie (Silje Hagrim Dahl), a teenage girl, finds herself reluctantly responsible for babysitting her much younger brother, Mads (Fredrik Mohn Frafjord). She has no interest in spending her day watching him and decides to take him to the local swimming pool, where he can swim under the lifeguards’ watch while she sunbathes. While at the pool, Sofie catches the attention of two local boys, Marius (played by Marcus Rix) and Sondre (played by Thomas Stene-Johansen).
The boys notice Mads and decide to play with him as an excuse to make contact with Sofie. She is fully aware of their plan and initially acts dismissively. At one point, she even leaves Mads with the two boys to meet a friend and smoke a cigarette, recklessly leaving a small child with strangers.
She returns to the pool and joins the game between the boys and Mads, which becomes increasingly flirtatious and touchy-feely. Once out of the pool, she asks Marius to apply sunscreen to her back. As he does this, she undoes her swimming top, exposing the side of her breast. Marius seizes the opportunity to test the boundaries by rubbing his hand along her arm, brushing against the side of her breast. Sofie doesn’t flinch. The moment is only interrupted when the boys’ mother calls out that it’s time for them to leave.
Later, the two boys ride their bicycles to find Sofie. They use Mads as a reference to locate her, asking local kids if they know him and where he lives. Eventually, they arrive at the house unannounced. After an awkward exchange, Sofie invites them in for pizza. She then sends Mads to the local shop to buy some ice cream, leaving her alone with the two boys.
At that moment, Sofie faces a pivotal choice—a fateful decision. She decides to prioritize her desire to fit in with the boys rather than protect her brother. After taking a shower, she leaves the door open. Marius then enters and joins her in the shower, and they begin to kiss.
As Mads makes his way home, he is asked by some children to retrieve a rogue football. Suddenly, he dashes across the road and gets hit by a braking car. At first glance, he appears to be okay and brushes off any help from the young female driver, who is in shock. However, something seems off as he walks away in silence, leaving the ball behind on the side of the road.
Back at the house, Sondre is searching for Sofie and Marius. He comes across the bedroom and, through a crack in the door, observes Marius engaged in oral sex with Sofie. He watches as Sofie invites him to participate.
Mads returns home and walks through the house, looking for Sofie, seemingly eager to tell her what just happened. Instead, he notices a pile of clothes on the bathroom floor. Clearly struggling, he pauses and places his hands on his head, contemplating his next move.
He opens the bedroom door and sees his sister and the two boys on the bed. He watches for a moment, bewildered, not wanting to cause embarrassment or a scene, and quietly retreats to the kitchen alone. He sits at the kitchen table and unwraps an ice cream. As the camera pans down, we see him struggling to unwrap it, his motor skills diminishing before our eyes. Suddenly, Mads’s head slowly drops onto the table as he rests it there, his eyes closing. The camera pulls back to reveal blood trickling down his face from his ear, a tragic indication of his condition.
“Reckless” captivates not through gore or spectacle, but by presenting a realistic portrayal of psychology. It illustrates how easily youthful carelessness, peer pressure, and the desire to fit in can lead to irreversible consequences. The short film received both praise and criticism at festivals for its stark examination of how quickly innocent play can turn into tragedy.
