In this edition of the “Sacred Houses Series,” we pay homage to Stella Cinema in Dublin, Ireland, as we continue to honor notable movie theaters worldwide.

The Stella Cinema opened its doors on January 29, 1923, located on Rathmines Road Lower in Dublin 6. At its opening, it could seat approximately 1,283 patrons, making it one of Ireland’s largest cinemas.
The building boasted a grand auditorium with a balcony, and on the first floor, there was a dance hall and ballroom. The cinema’s design was luxurious, featuring granite pilasters on the original façade, Art Deco embellishments, and an illuminated fountain displayed in front of the screen during intermissions.

Throughout the mid-20th century, the Stella served as an important social hub in Rathmines. People visited not only to see films but also to enjoy the ambiance and the dance hall located upstairs. By the 1970s, the cinema’s role had evolved; it began hosting not just films but also live music and various events. In the 1980s, in response to changing cinema business models, large single-auditorium cinemas were divided into two screens.

Despite its rich history, the Stella faced commercial challenges, like many single-screen cinemas in the 1980s and 1990s, and ultimately closed its doors to the public in 2004.
After a period of closure, the cinema was purchased and underwent significant restoration. It reopened on October 31, 2017, with the auditorium restored to a single screen (reversing the previous split into two screens) and the seating upgraded to a luxury format, featuring leather armchairs, couches, and even beds in the front row. Additionally, a full cocktail bar and terrace were added in the former ballroom area.
The Stella has since gained international recognition; for instance, it was ranked among the world’s most beautiful cinemas by publications like TimeOut, coming in at #16 globally, due to its restored elegance.

The Stella serves as a tangible link between the golden age of suburban picture palaces and modern luxury cinema. For the Rathmines area of Dublin, the Stella remains a local landmark, both historically as a significant social venue since the 1920s and currently as a popular luxury cinema destination.
